300 years ago the trees were growing that were to become the timber frame supporting Tréhús. 166 years ago the barn frame was raised on a farm south of Georgetown. 26 years ago the restored 1854 landmark became the heart of a hand crafted 4500 sq-ft home.
Situated on a dramatic 7 acres is a transitional historic timber frame retreat clad in patterned red cedar shingles and shakes that respects the nature and legacy of the vast and densely wooded site.
The house marks the intersection of 3 landscapes: natural forest, wetlands & Ontario farmland. The Shaws Creek, part of the Credit River watershed, runs through the forest, feeds the abundant wildlife, wetlands & deep artesian well providing water for healthy living and geothermal systems.
The design employs a massive archetypal gable barn form with a simple posted wrap around porch that minimizes the visual mass of the building on the exterior, and yields a light-filled volume of exposed timber with high and cathedral ceilings on the interior emphasizing the verticality of the three story timber frame and the art of the historic craftsmen who made it. Numerous traditionally proportioned steel clad wood thermopane windows are placed based on a rule of windows on at least two sides of every space to capture the natural movement of the sun and nature all around. This is a home that receives feedback from the position of the sun and moon and its inhabitants gain awareness of the environment throughout the day and the seasons.
